How to prevent frozen pipes

11/20/2019 (Permalink)

Aftermath of burst pipe Damage from frozen and burst pipes.

Frozen pipes can happen to anyone. Businesses, homeowners, renters, frozen water doesn’t differentiate. A typical burst pipe stems from a build up of pressure between the water source and the blockage, in this instance, frozen water.

Most common causes of burst pipes:

  • Piping that runs against exterior walls, as they do not have the typical insulation.
  • Pipes that are in unhealthy eated areas of the structure such as under stairs or in basements.
  • Pipes that are exposed to external conditions such as outdoor hose lines.

Best methods for preventing frozen pipes:

  • Try to periodically get heat to pipes that are in unheated  areas such as under cabinets. A simple solution would be to open the cabinet and let the warm air circulate.
  • Improve insulation around pipes that are unprotected.
  • Keep your structure’s temperature well above freezing when gone for extended lengths above time, ideally no lower than 55 degrees.
