Nothing goes quite as well with the heat of summer as the smell of burgers and brats over flames on the grill. Whether you’re cooking for yourself or the whole neighborhood, its important to remember your basic grill safety techniques so you can safely enjoy your time with the people you love!

Grill Outside and Away From Structures

This may seem like a no brainer, but is possibly the most important safety tip. Use caution when setting up your grilling space. Make sure you have adequate space between your grill and any surrounding structures. Be sure to look out for low hanging tree branches over the grill as well.

Keep Your Grill Clean

Not only will this improve the efficiency and taste of your grilling experience, cleaning your grill is an important step for grill safety. As we cook burgers and brats stuffed with cheese, fat will drip down off the grill grates and collect in the bottom of the grill. You may have to do some scraping to knock it loose, but after that a vacuum can be used to collect any ash or grease.

Grill on Stable Surface

Keeping your grill on an even, stable surface is the next important step for grill safety. You want your grill to be stable as you do not want the grill to roll away, or tip over, potentially causing harm to you or your home.

Be Mindful While Grilling

As we tend to get out the grill when we host friends and family, it is very important to be mindful of the grill while it is operating. It is easy to get distracted by pets or children running around having fun. Try to keep anyone not involved with cooking a safe distance away from the grill so they don’t bump in to it, potentially causing a burn.

Most importantly, Have Fun!
