Protein Fire Damage Pt.1

Food cooking on stove in cast iron pan Food cooking on stove in cast iron pan

We’ve all had the vision, you’ve made it through crunch time and the Top Chef judges are just sampling your offering. Unanimous agreement that your dish is the best! Snap back to reality, and your day dreaming has caused your beautiful ribeye in the cast iron to overcook and start smoking. The smoke detector starts ringing and you rush to turn on a fan and open the windows to air out the house. Crisis averted! Well, maybe not entirely.

Smoke and soot damage from cooking may not be as evident as smoke and soot damage from a traditional fire. While cooking animal proteins such as beef or pork, burning the meat in question can produce smoke that is partly composed of animal fats. This smoke will stick to your walls, however, it may not show on your walls like you would think with traditional smoke. Protein smoke leaves behind a sticky film that is hard to see, but can be just as damaging to your home. Over time, other materials will stick to the film of protein smoke on your walls, such as soot from candles or household dust.

Do not worry though! SERVPRO of Sioux Falls is equipped to help you clean and restore your home! Read part two of our protein fire blogs to find out how!

Board up after Fire

Exterior of home with damage from fire Exterior of home with damage from fire

While responding to a fire, a firefighter will oftentimes knock out a portion of an exterior wall to help combat the flames, depending on the location of the fire within the home. Once extinguished, you are left with a hole from the exterior of your home in to the interior. This can be particularly concerning if the fire damage in minimal enough that the home can be occupied during cleaning. In the cold winter months in South Dakota, it can easily get cold enough to freeze pipes, causing a burst than can greatly damage your home with water.

A part of SERVPRO of Sioux Falls’ fire damage response includes board up services to protect the interior of your home against the harsh exterior conditions. When your home is damaged by fire, know that we are standing by to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Our fire damage mitigation team recently responded to a residential smoke and soot cleanup job in Sioux Falls, and quickly realized the massive effort it would take to clean up after this small fire. Upon inspection, our team realized they would have their hands full with cleaning contents. The customer we were helping collected posters and other knickknacks from traveling and had every inch of the walls in the basement covered. The smoke and soot damage wasn’t entirely evident until they started removing items for cleaning. As you can see in the photo, smoke and soot can get everywhere. Even though a surface may be covered, if there is enough space for air to move, there is enough space for smoke to cause damage!

After experiencing a house fire it is common to feel overwhelmed, stressed, worried and have increased feelings of uncertainty. A house fire can be a terrifying experience, especially for children and pets. After the fire is extinguished and everyone is deemed safe, one of the first things to do is call your insurance agent. They will get the fire damage claims process started for you. You will need to find a safe and comfortable place to stay, even if it is for one night. Your insurance agent should be able to help you with this, as your policy likely includes provisions for lodgings if you have been displaced. Once you have shelter, you can begin to get a plan in place and give you and your family time to rest. After helping you secure lodging and any necessary items such as clothing, your agent will begin the process of restoration in your home. When you reach this stage, SERVPRO of Sioux Falls is standing by 24/7 to help. We are able to provide emergency board up services and begin the cleaning and removal of smoke and soot. We know the stresses that can come with a fire in your home, and we want to help you recover, every step along the way.

There are many potential causes of fires in the home. From faulty wiring to an appliance failure, issues can arise suddenly.

#1 Cause of fires in the home:

The most frequent cause of house fires is unattended cooking!

Now that we know the most frequent source of fires in the home, here are some tips to help stay safe.

  • Be sure to stay in the room while cooking with a heat source. Keeping an eye on your cooking will help you be prepared for any accidents.
  • It is also important to use a timer while cooking so you don’t lose track of time.
  • Vigilance in the kitchen is particularly important during the holidays when cooking and baking more than you usually do.
  • Even while cooking with precautions, accidents can happen. Be sure to have  fire extinguishers throughout your home. Be sure you are properly educated on the use of a fire extinguisher to be prepared in the event that you have to use one.

Should you experience a fire in your home, SERVPRO of Sioux Falls is standing by 24/7 to help you through an emergency!

A fire in the home can be a traumatic experience for everyone involved. With Christmas quickly approaching it is good to remember that the risk of fires in the home are generally higher during the winter months. There are various things this time of year to be cautious of to keep your home fire free. We have compiled a list of the most common causes of fires in the home around the holidays and winter months:

  1. Cooking- Distractions can pull you away from the kitchen, leaving food material susceptible to burning.
  2. Candles- Candles should be extinguished if you are leaving the room.
  3. Christmas trees- An improperly cared for tree can dry quickly and be prone to combustion.
  4. Holiday Lights- Frayed wires or electrical issues can cause fires in the home.
  5. Space Heaters- Improper use or having the heater set near combustible materials can cause fires.

If you experience a fire make SERVPRO your first call. We understand the value of your possessions,  and our team will work  hard to bring life back into your home or business after a fire. As the local leaders in cleanup and restoration after a fire, let SERVPRO of Sioux Falls help you get your home back.

Holiday Fire Safety

Decorated Christmas tree Decorated Christmas tree

“Oh the weather outside is... Well not quite frightful yet, thankfully.” But we are racing in to cooler temps, snow, and the holiday season. The Holiday’s bring about a certain sense of cheer and togetherness. You’re gathered with the family, snuggled up in a cozy blanket, going back for another slice of pie. What’s missing from this scenario? For a lot of families, a nice scented candle like cinnamon apple to tie the whole ambiance together. If you’re going that route, be sure the extra helping of pie doesn’t make you take a nap with the candle burning. With the modern materials in today’s home furnishings, fires can start and spread quickly. If you plan on burning a candle, be sure to always have someone alert with an eye on it, and extinguish the candle before leaving the room.

Christmas Trees... Go with the real thing or Artificial?

A Christmas tree to gather the family around for the holidays is a wonderful sight. Decorated with ornaments and family memories, presents at the bottom, and pretty lights strung throughout. A great image for the holiday season. When choosing a tree for the holiday season, you have the option of using a real tree or an artificial. On the safety side of things, we would recommend using an artificial tree. However, a real tree can be a totally safe option if you maintain the care of it properly. This involves regular watering to keep the tree from drying out. An improperly cared for, dry tree can go up like a matchbox if exposed to a candle or perhaps an electric short from the lights you have used to decorate the tree.

Standing by to help your family!

At SERVPRO of Sioux Falls, we want everyone to have a safe, enjoyable holiday season, surrounded by the ones you love. If the worst should happen to your family and you experience a fire in your Sioux Falls area home this season, we are standing by 24-7, “Ready for whatever Happens!”

Summer Safety Series: Grill Safety

6/2/2020 (Permalink)

Spread of food on grill Spread of food on grill

Nothing goes quite as well with the heat of summer as the smell of burgers and brats over flames on the grill. Whether you’re cooking for yourself or the whole neighborhood, its important to remember your basic grill safety techniques so you can safely enjoy your time with the people you love!

Grill Outside and Away From Structures

This may seem like a no brainer, but is possibly the most important safety tip. Use caution when setting up your grilling space. Make sure you have adequate space between your grill and any surrounding structures. Be sure to look out for low hanging tree branches over the grill as well.

Keep Your Grill Clean

Not only will this improve the efficiency and taste of your grilling experience, cleaning your grill is an important step for grill safety. As we cook burgers and brats stuffed with cheese, fat will drip down off the grill grates and collect in the bottom of the grill. You may have to do some scraping to knock it loose, but after that a vacuum can be used to collect any ash or grease.

Grill on Stable Surface

Keeping your grill on an even, stable surface is the next important step for grill safety. You want your grill to be stable as you do not want the grill to roll away, or tip over, potentially causing harm to you or your home.

Be Mindful While Grilling

As we tend to get out the grill when we host friends and family, it is very important to be mindful of the grill while it is operating. It is easy to get distracted by pets or children running around having fun. Try to keep anyone not involved with cooking a safe distance away from the grill so they don’t bump in to it, potentially causing a burn.

Most importantly, Have Fun!

A kitchen that fire has heavy fire damage to the stove area Devastating to return home to this

Of all the fires reported in the United States every year, 31 percent happen in residential homes. Negligence, open flames, cooking and more are factors in these fires. Half of all house fires start in the kitchen. Not surprising since it’s where you do the most cooking and house many appliances. The dinner hour, between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. is when most fires happen. The picture is showing a devastating kitchen fire that was likely caused by a small appliance. All levels of the home have a thick covering of black soot and will require demolition and rebuild. Appliances account for about 4 percent of house fires. Here’s some appliance safety tips to follow to decrease your chances of something malfunctioning and catching on fire. Make sure it’s UL approved, never plug them into an extension cord or two-slot outlet and unplug anything, within reason, when you’re on vacation.

SERVPRO’s compassionate staff was there to help this family during the initial walk through to look at the extent of the damage, talk with the adjuster and will continue to be there for them into the pack out phase, demolition and rebuild. Our hearts go out to this family and we’re glad that we’re faster to any size disaster to make this difficult situation as little easier for them.

Continuing Education Course on Fire

Attendees using the SERVPRO products

SERVPRO of West Sioux Falls recently hosted a continuing education course for insurance professionals. The course was designed to teach and explain the special procedures used by SERVPRO professionals in mitigating and restoring fire damage claims for the insured. The course provided the insurance professionals with a better understanding of the work performed by the mitigation vendor at fire damage work sites. Participants had hands on training using products that SERVPRO technicians will use to clean surfaces after a fire. Emergency tips were given which can drastically reduce the cost of the claim if performed in a timely manner. Some of the tips are: Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from spreading and additional damage from occurring, place clean towels or old linens on rugs and high traffic areas and upholstery, coat chrome faucets, trim and appliances with petroleum jelly or oil and place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet. Examples of work performed to mitigate fire damage were shared. The course helped give agents and adjusters a better understanding of what their insured goes through when they have fire damage.

Smoke Damage after a Fire

7/12/2019 (Permalink)

Glass vase with heavy wet soot

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate soft goods, small openings and anywhere in your home, causing hidden damage and odor.

We master smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of West Sioux Falls will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

When you hire SERVPRO of West Sioux Falls we not only restore your home we bring your memories back to life.

Saving Memories

Monica came home to smoke pouring out of her windows. She was in complete awe of what was happening. The fire department knocked out the fire in twenty minutes.

Once she was able to tour her home, she was completely overwhelmed. She was at a loss for words and overcome by so many emotions. It was SERVPRO of West Sioux Falls' privilege to help Monica and her family.

We not only were able to clean, deodorize, and rebuild her home; we helped restored memories. The first picture seems like an ordinary duck, full of soot and odor.  You could probably go to a local retail store and purchase a new one. This was not the story. The duck was an important memory; Monica shared that the duck was her grandmother's and when she passed away she made sure she was able to keep it. It reminded her of Grandma's cookies and the fun times as a child. We were able to clean this precious memory and Monica was elated.

Sioux Falls Tips for Smoke Alarms

Smoke detectors saved this family!

Tragedy Strikes

It was a cold evening in January with the wind howling outside. A family of four snuggled on the couch to watch their favorite movie. After the movie the family performed their evening bedtime routine. Each child was tucked into bed and drifted off to sleep. After the evening news the Mother and Father couldn’t keep their eyes open and soon were fast asleep.

Loud and intimidating sounds filled the house. One by one the smoke alarms were warning the family of the present danger. The family raced to safety.

A small unattended candle in the bathroom caught the shower curtain on fire. Thanks to their dedicated monthly ritual of testing their smoke alarms the family escaped and were not harmed.

Tips for testing your smoke detector:

Check Location:

  • Smoke detectors should be placed on the ceiling or high up on the wall. Most models look like small, white discs with a single LED light on the top or side.
  • Do not place near doors, windows, or ventilation systems. This may affect air flow of how the smoke would travel to set off the alarm.

Determine Power:

  • Check the power by pressing the test button
  • The alarm should be sounding
  • Walk away and ensure you can hear the alarm from other rooms

Check Smoke Sensor:

  • Hold matches or a lighter in your hand and, while you’re below the smoke detector, hold the flame. Blow it out immediately and let the smoke rise to the detector. The smoke should trigger and set off the alarm. If it does not activate, your detector is not operating correctly.
    • Be careful when handling matches to avoid burning your hands.
    • After the test, you can clean the smoke with a handheld vacuum or wipe with a damp cloth.

Fire alarms are essential safety devices that, when activated, will alert you of danger and quite possibly save your life by giving you more time to evacuate. Testing your alarms monthly ensures that the detectors and alarms are working properly and will operate as intended during a fire.

In Sioux Falls, SERVPRO is here to help.

After a fire is an overwhelming time.  The things that you do next can help or hurt the cleanup process.  If you have a fire in the Sioux Falls area, here are some tips to follow.

Do:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
  • Keep hands clean.  Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
  • Change HVAC filter, but leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Sioux Falls Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
